The clients on this project were looking to add patio spaces to the terraces created by a series of retaining walls that had previously been installed. The upper level was to include a patio area along the garage that would later be separated from the driveway by a wrought iron fence. The middle terrace was to be a large patio area for entertaining. On the lower level the client wanted a small circular patio to create a more intimate seating area. Steps were needed to traverse the steep slope between the upper and middle terraces.
The upper patio space was created between the garage and a large retaining wall. This space featured an inlaid circular design. The middle terrace consisted of a cobblestone paver patio with accent border. The patio was softened by holding the pavers back from the wall and creating a narrow planting area which also assisted in a natural water runoff management. Basic, low maintenance plantings were selected for this area with pockets of color sprinkled throughout. The lower level included a circular patio area sized to accommodate a small table and chairs. The patio was surrounded with plantings and accessed by a narrow pathway creating an intimate space to enjoy a cup of coffee. A series of irregular shaped steps were used to improve access between the middle and upper terrace. These steps run from the base a wall above to the top of a wall below. Plantings were incorporated between the steps to soften them and give the appearance of a narrower, meandering pathway up the slope. Landscape lighting was also incorporated into the planting areas to add nighttime interest and extend the use of the space.
